This year just like every other year I started casually asking our boys what they wanted to be for Halloween around August. In August they wanted to be super heroes, in the beginning of September they wanted to be musicians, then we watched The Greatest Showman and the dancing, singing at the top of the lungs and jumping off the couch stunts filled our day to day life. Yes, I also joined in the dancing, singing and jumping off of the couch — hello?! I could totally have been an acrobat.
Once I found the super cool fabric for the “Circus Conductor’s” costume, and the patterns were cut: the choice was set and the costumes were on their way to become a reality.
Work it little man! Imagine: “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack being played by dad and both of our little loves dancing, jumping, and giggling through these photos. It was pretty adorable and they sure have some moves! (They must get it from their Mama 😘)
Initially our youngest wanted to be “a lion that jumps through a fire hoop” but after some research and findings of the heartbreaking realness of past + present animal cruelty in the circus, I decided to give him some other options to choose from. I showed him images of:
“Fire Breathing man” [NOPE],
“The Strongest Man in the World” [NOPE],
“Human Cannonball” [ YES MAMA!!!]
Ding! Ding!! DING!!! we had a WINNER!
If you know our youngest at all, you would know that his daily get up usually includes a helmet, goggles, a cape, a towel, and some sort of shield. So an Evel Knievel inspired human cannonball costume, was PERFECT.
What I’ve found in the six years and counting of this Mama hand making Halloween costumes, is that I challenge myself more every year and it’s totally worth it! I love the process, always making it a point to include our littles in it from the brainstorming stage, shopping + collecting supplies and through each DIY.
The photoshoots are a blast and they are life lasting memories that we will treasure forever — AND … every year’s costumes are my favorite.
Getting creative in this way: letting our imaginations soar, pattern making, designing, sewing, gluing, painting, and cutting, the costumes and props is always the creativity we needed to bond and exclaim + applaud every finished piece (so much more fun when you have your kids screaming: “WOW MOM THAT IS SOOOOO COOL!” It’s always the creative challenge I personally needed that I had probably been neglecting.
Check out the costume + prop details below. We hope you had an awesome Halloween loves! Don’t worry: I’m also eating the good Halloween candy on the couch after our tiny humans are asleep in bed right there with you.
We’re in this together! 🌈♥️
