KIDS COSTUME DIY: MINION 🍌

October is officially here and you can bet Halloween + Halloween costumes have been on our minds. 🎃 I ask our littles what they want to be for Halloween starting November 1st, literally the day after Halloween every year (kidding). I do ask every few months though because they change their minds about every time I ask them and this Mama needs as much time I as can get. 🌀

We are currently putting together THIS years costumes which you will see at the end of the month. 🤗 While we’ve been working on those I’ve been going down Halloween memory lane. I decided to go back to the photos of when our Halloween costume DIY tradition began—8 YEARS ago when our oldest was 2! So crazy to think about and I miss him at that age so much. 🥺

That Halloween he dressed up as a MINION from Despicable Me. It was the cutest thing ever and can I just say: I’ve always tried to take step by step photos of my creations even before ALL KIDS was a thing because I just really really enjoy it. Also, they are part of our memories that I cherish greatly and I LOVE looking back at it all. I’m SO glad I’ve photographed our creations and now I get to share this DIY with you. 🥸

DIY - KIDS COSTUME DIY: MINION - All Kids Are Gifted

SUPPLIES:

  • Hoodie from your littles (or your) closet to reference for size + trace around

  • Rotary cutter/scissors

  • Hot glue gun

  • Permanent marker

  • Sewing pins

  • Sewing machine/you can also hand sew

  • Blue overalls (we thrifted ours)

  • Printout of Minion eyes to fit in sealing rings (you can print in color/blk + wht and color in like we did)

  • (2) black pipe cleaners

  • 1 yard yellow fabric to make hoodie + minion hat ( we used this fleece)

  • Black fabric strip for minion hat (Minions “goggle band”)

  • (2) Small mason jar sealing rings (Minion “goggles”)

  • Metal snaps to fasten minion hat

  • 2 x 2 inch square of black felt

STEP ONE

Trace torso of your reference hoodie onto your fabric, cut + pin.

STEP TWO

Sew sides + top of shoulders, leaving sleeves and neck open to attach hood + sleeves. Fold the hood from your hoodie you’re using to trace in half and trace twice—creating two hood pieces that you will sew together. Cut + sew along the back part of hood. Then pin it along the neck of the hoodie + sew. Tip: cut a slit a few inches down the front of your hoodie for sewing room.

STEP THREE

Trace sleeves onto your costume hoodie fabric—cut, pin + sew. Using your black felt, create a Gru symbol “G”—cut + hot glue to your overalls. I love having our littles around when I’m creating (see 2nd pic). 🧡

* Minion overalls ✔️

STEP FOUR

For your minion hat, you will create a 2nd hood using steps above—just don’t attach it to your hoodie. Size, sew in + adjust as you need to do it fits your littles head. Sew the metal snaps to the bottom of the hat for clasping.

Print out Minion Eyes printable, color in (if you need to—our printer was out of color ink) + cut out. We covered both sides of the eyes in clear tape to laminate them and make them waterproof + more durable.

Then, using your glue gun—hot glue the eye cutouts into the mason jar sealer rings. You can then glue them side by side to each other. Sew your black fabric strip all the way around your hat, then hot glue the Minion eyes to the front of the hat. Ta daaaa! You have your minion wearing goggles. 🥽

This is the longest step to put together but it’s TOTALLY worth it! 😍

* Minion hat ✔️

STEP FIVE

This step is optional: Mark the top of your minion hat with dots where you want your minions hair to go using a permanent marker. With scissors, cut through each dot and then thread your pipe cleaners through the holes—cutting each strand to size preferred. I knotted the pipe cleaner on the inside of the hat and hot glued it in place so it was comfy for my little to wear.

NOW: You are ready for some trick or treating! Look at that adorable smile. 🍬🤩

If you liked this costume as much as we did, be sure to pin it in your Pinterest—that way you can come back to it whenever. It would also be a great DIY for a themed birthday outfit, to add to your littles costume bin, as a gift for a birthday/Christmas, etc.
